CHENNAI: While the Central and State governments are in the process of discussing the specifics of the 12th five-year plan, the issue of establishing a registry for the differently-abled so that they could access government schemes in a hassle-free manner, is being looked into, said Dhanavel, Member Secretary of State Planning Commission.Speaking at the ninth anniversary of the starting of ‘Nethrodhaya’, home for the differently-abled in Mogappair, here on Sunday, Dhanavel said that while reports say there were 16.4 lakh differently-abled persons in the State, the suggestion of starting a registry for their benefit by the government has been mooted from different quarters. The discussion on creating this in the 12th plan was on, the Member Secretary of State Planning Commission  said.Dhanavel said that though a State Level Resource Centre for the differently-abled was already functioning, there are plans to expand it in a big way and help in capacity building so that such persons could become more employable. The Member Secretary of State Planning Commission   also said Rs 2 crore has already been allocated for upgrading the Braille Institute in Poonamallee.
