UDUPI:  Due to incessant rains for the last three days, many rivers in Udupi district were overflooded and houses in many of the low lying areas were inundated. District administration has shifted the families from the inundated areas to the 'Ganji Kendras', the rehabilitation centres set up in local schools and temples. The rain storm has also damaged pakka and kaccha houses, some totally and some partially, across the district.
As the meteorology department has cautioned that heavy rains will continue for the next 24 hours, Deputy Commissioner of Udupi M T Reju, as a precautionary measure, declared holiday for all the schools and colleges of Udupi district on Monday. People living on the river banks have been asked to be cautious and fishermen have been advised not to venture in to the sea for fishing for the next 48 hours. Four houses in Moodugiliyaru near Kota have been inundated. People from those houses have been shifted to the Ganji Kendras, using boats. Likewise, a habitat comprising 50 families in Bannadi, in Vaddarse village has been inundated. As a bridge in Ajekar was inundated the link between connecting towns was disrupted.

Low lying areas of Baikady, Uppur and other surrounding areas were also inundated following the intense rains. In Pilar village, due to rain storm, house and coconut garden of one Dhooma Shetty was damaged to the tune of 1.50 lakhs, house of one Govind Shetty was partially collapsed causing a damage to the tune of 10,000, house and areca garden of one Thumbu Poojary was damaged to the tune of Rs 1.20 lakhs.

Wall of the house of one Nagarathna in Heroor was collapsed causing a damage to the tune of  Rs 25,000.
