KOCHI: The survey of the Mullaperiyar dam by the Kerala dam authority on the impact of its possible collapse is yet to be completed even as the last date to file its various analysis reports before the Supreme Court is fast approaching. The dam-break analysis, which is conducted to study the impact of dam collapse, has only reached halfway.Heavy rain delayed the survey work, a senior officer in the Irrigation Department said on condition of anonymity. “Heavy rain delayed the analysis process by two to three weeks. We are working hard to finish the test by July 30 and submit the report to the government on August 2. Later, it will be compiled and submitted to the Supreme Court before August 4,” he said. Sources in the Irrigation Department told Express that the survey work began two weeks ago, but it had covered only 27 km downstream. Almost half of the survey has to be finished within the next three days. The sources said the survey got delayed due to the remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) test conducted by the Central Soil and Material Research Station of New Delhi. “The ROV test had to be stopped midway as the vehicle developed some technical snag. It was resumed only after spare parts of the vehicle were brought from France two months later. The analysis of surkhi material (mixture used in the construction of dam) by drilling holes in the walls of the dam was conducted early this month,” an official said. However, Water Resource Minister P J Joseph expressed confidence that the survey would be completed in time. “The survey is being conducted in a speedy manner and we are trying to finish it by July 30. The final report of the dam break analysis will be presented before the Supreme Court on the given date at any cost,” he said.
