The Ahmedabad Railway Police arrested a man on charges of theft. However, during interrogation, it was revealed that the accused had lured 15 girls into marriage by lying about his identity.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Shahbaz, had been impersonating a Major in the Indian Army named Harshit Chaudhury. He faces multiple cases of duping women from Gujarat, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand. One of the victims has also lodged a case against him in Aligarh.
Shahbaz, a resident of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested by the Ahmedabad Railway Police on charges of theft on a Vande Bharat train in Gujarat. A fake identity card in the name of ‘Major Harshit Chaudhary’ was recovered from him.
SP Balram Meena of the Western Railway Police stated that Mohammad Shahbaz is married and has two children. The railway police has not registered any case of conspiracy against him yet.
The accused contacted women through Shaadi.com and dating apps. The investigation also uncovered three previous cases registered against him. A fake Aadhar card in the name of an Army Major was found in his possession. Shahbaz admitted to using this false identity to marry women.
Shahbaz is believed to have stolen a passenger’s trolley bag on the Vande Bharat train. After reviewing CCTV footage and the passenger chart, police found that the accused had reserved his seat under the name “Harshit Manoj Singh Chaudhary.” The Ahmedabad Railway Police tracked him down and arrested him.
During questioning, it was revealed that Shahbaz had joined the Army in 2015 but was suspended until June 2024 for being unfit. Further investigation showed that he used fake identity cards and a fake PAN card for his railway and air travels.
