THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: R Selvaraj, a leader, whose popularity never went beyond the limits of two taluks in the southern part of the Capital district, could sent shock waves in the entire political spectrum of the state by his unusual act on Friday morning, four days after his 64th birthday.Selvaraj is neither a match to former CPM leaders M V Raghavan, K R Gowri, Chathunni Master, O Bharathan, P V Kunhikannan nor he came anywhere near short-lived phenomenon such as A P Abdullakutty, K S Manoj or S Sivaraman. He is the 35th member to resign from the Kerala Legislative Assembly. But his resignation stands out for its timing and reason. Unlike any other member, he has put in his papers for the inner party feud. Though it cannot be termed similar, the CPM had to face such a situation in the district 44 years ago, when its member from Attingal, K P Kosala Ramadas resigned on November 26, 1968, ending his Parliamentary career of nearly 20 months. He later turned to Trade Union activities. When E Chandrasekharan Nair (Kottarakkara), C H Haridas (Nilmabur), Talekkunnil Basheer (Kazhakkoottam), K P Mammu Master (Thalassery) and V Balram (Vadakkancherry) resigned, they were making way for Ministers C Achuthamenon (Chief Minister), Aryadan Mohammed, A K Antony (Chief Minister), E K Nayanar (Chief Minister) and K Muraleedharan respectively.K Karunakaran (Mala) and A K Antony (Chertala) became Union Ministers when they resigned from the Chief Ministership. While, Vakkom Purushothaman (Attingal), Ramesh Chennithala (Harippad), George Eden (Ernakulam), K C Venugopal (Alappuzha), K V Thomas (Ernakulam) and K Sudhakaran (Kannur) had resigned to become Lok Sabha Members, the Muslim League members in the ninth Assembly P M Abubacker (Guruvayur) and U A Beeran (Thirurangadi) resigned for joining the Indian National League, formed as a protest against the parent party. But when nine MLAs of the 11th assembly M P Gangadharan (Ponnani), P Sankaran (Koyilandy), Shobhana George (Chengannur), Malethu Sarala Devi (Aranmula), Radha Raghavan (North Wayanad), T V Chandramohan (Kunnamkulam), D Sugathan (Ambalappuzha), M A Chandrasekharan (Vadakkekara) and N D Appachan (Sultan Bathery) from the Indian National Congress had resigned to join the National Congress (Indira), later known as Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran), which created history for the mass resignation by MLAs for the first time in Kerala.Selvaraj may create historyIf Selvaraj contests as an independent candidate in the Neyyatinkara constituency byelection, he could repeat the history created by N Sundaran Nadar, an independent who had won the neighbouring Parassala seat in 1996 by defeating CPM Candidate W R Heeba.
