CHENNAI: Independent candidates have topped the list with 318 cases booked against them for violating the Election Commission’s model code of conduct followed by candidates of the DMK with 167 cases, police said on Tuesday.Police said they have registered a total of 825 cases of violation since the announcement of the local polls. They have booked 107 cases against the DMDK candidates and 83 against the AIADMK. While the MDMK has 62 cases, Congress has 38 followed by CPI with 26, police said, adding that the BJP had only four cases.Sources said that more cases were registered for violating the poll code during campaigning. In the previous elections, more cases were booked for violating rules while using publicity material, said the source.Cases were booked for campaigning beyond the stipulated time, campaigning in places that were not permitted and criticism of individuals’ private lives.A police officer said that a murder case was reported in Tirunelveli district where a man was killed for complaining to the EC against a candidate contesting for the post of Panchayat president.Chennai city topped the list with 287 cases registered, followed by North Zone of Tamil Nadu with 171 cases, police said. Southern districts have reported very few cases. “We have beefed up the security in southern districts following a recent incident in Paramkudi. This was the reason for reduction in the number of cases,” the officer added.Police also said in Chennai, out of the 4,876 booths, 1,900 had been considered critical and 1,500 anti-social elements had already been ‘secured’. Apart from the 200 wards from the Corporation limits, Chennai police will also cover 58 wards from Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur districts, police said.
