Police officers will have to answer the court as to why protesters were allowed to get away with vandalism.

New Delhi: Rajasthan is almost back to normal a day after the Gurjars and the Vasundhara Raje government reached a peace deal. But the unrest and the scenes of vandalism in the National Capital Region prompted the Supreme Court to issue notices to Police chiefs of four states. The Court called Monday’s bandh incidents 'a national shame'.

Gurjar protesters attacked an express train in Mathura, which injured 24 people. In Dadri, they blocked the railway tracks due to which all trains were held up for 6-hours. In Delhi, all the interstate highways were blocked, DTC buses were set on fire, public property was damaged all across the National Capital Region in the name of bandh called by the Gurjar agitators.

The Supreme Court has asked the police chiefs of Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi to examine the media footage of violence to identify the defaulters. The officers will have to answer the court as to why protesters were allowed to get away with vandalism.

"The court has asked us to examine the various frames of the media footage to identify the offenders. We will pass on the tapes to the police so that they can identify if there is any breach of duty from their side,” said Supreme Court Lawyer Rajiv Dhawan.

Dadri-New Delhi section of Northern Railways faced maximum damage on Monday as trains were attacked, and railway property was ransacked by the Gurjar protestors. The Agra zone of North Central railways has estimated a damage of close to Rs 90 lakhs incurred due to the riots.

"This is a very serious matter. We will employ railway police to ensure that such things don’t happen in future,” said Agra SP Sushil Kr Singh.

Meanwhile the Supreme Court has given the police chiefs of the affected states ten days to file a comprehensive report on the damages incurred.
