PM 'pained' at Ujjain prof's killing
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was speaking at a function to honour award winning teachers at his residence.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said he was pained to hear the death of a professor in Ujjain last week at the hands of "unruly students".

Speaking at a function to honour award winning teachers at his residence, he said, "I was deeply pained when I heard of the death of a teacher last week in Ujjain at the hands of unruly students."

"I am also pained by incidents of disrespectful behaviour by students and some anti-social elements who pretend to be students," he said.

Professor H S Sabharwal who was supervising the student union elections of Madhav College in Ujjain, died last week after an attack by unruly students who were protesting the cancellation of the polls following complaints of irregularities.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh secretary of ABVP, Vimal Tomar, arrested in connection with the murder case, was on Monday sent to judical custody till September 15 by a local court.

He was produced before judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) R S Madia by CID, which is probing the case, following which he was sent to the judicial custody.

Tomar was in police custody after being arrested, while another accused in the case, ABVP state President, Shashiranjan Akela, is already in 15-day judicial

remand.
