New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may go to Havana for the Non Aligned Summit (NAM) in mid-September and skip the United Nations General Assembly meeting, sources tell CNN-IBN.
The PM may do this to accommodate the Left, which accuses the Government of a pro-US tilt and has been exhorting it to give importance to NAM.
"We appeal to the PM to go to NAM. India also headed it once and the PM should go there," CPI-M Leader Yechury said.
In a note presented to the Government this week, Left parties had accused it of succumbing to US pressure on foreign policy and ignoring India’s traditional allies.
Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday downplayed the Left’s criticism of the Government’s economic and foreign policy issues, saying that this was 'natural' in coalition politics.
"It is a natural phenomenon. In coalition politics such feelings are expressed," Mukherjee said. Asked to comment on CPI(M) leader Jyoti Basu's statement that the Left parties were unhappy with the Government’s pro-Amercian tilt, he said: "He (Basu) has thought it fit to say so and has commented. There is nothing wrong in that."
