MADURAI: Manrique Martin, the Mexican Mathematics post-doctoral scholar arrested for murdering his estranged live-in partner, was a “jovial person committed to research and very close to his child,” says his research guide Professor S Arumugam. But even in his wildest dreams Arumugam would not have imagined that his “brilliant student” was so committed to research that he would attend class with his (Martin) ex-girlfriend’s body lying ‘packed’ in his car boot. Investigators were taken aback on the 40-year old’s “cool behaviour” after murdering Mexican national Ceule Denise Acosta on April 9. “He stayed on the second floor, a three-storied residential quarters within the university premises. He had skillfully managed to keep the murder under wraps from the neighbours. In fact, after killing Acosta at around 2 pm, he hid her body inside the bedroom and cleaned the blood stains on the floor,” Sethumanimathavan, the investigating officer of the case, told Express.Later in the evening, he brought his daughter Adila (born to Acosta) from school and spent time with her till she went to bed. “At midnight, he packed Acosta’s corpse in a huge travel bag and managed to take it down to the ground floor and dump it in the boot of his Ford car,” the officer added. The following day (April 10), he dropped Adila in the school and then headed to the university to attend to his research work. Martin had also dumped her mobile phone.
