KOCHI: Accommodation problem of women working in government offices is poised to end with the opening of a hostel in Kakkanad. Women from across the state struggling to find a safe place to stay are pinning their hopes on the hostel which is in the final phase of completion. But they are worried about the delay in the opening of the hostel which according to authorities is due to the absence of necessary furniture. The building was constructed a few months ago, but the government is yet to take steps to make it functional. The hostel, which was built under the Public Works Department, comprises four floors with 96 rooms. It was inaugurated by the then Works Minister, M Vijayakumar. Approximately Rs 4 crore has been spent on this building.“The construction work of the building has been completed, but we cannot operate without the furniture. We have sent proposals but the government is yet to take decisions in this regard,” sources said. They said, “When the news of its inauguration was published in newspapers, a lot of people came seeking accommodation.”The sources said the procedures were held back owing to the elections. “We hope that the funds to furnish the hostel would be met with in the next budget,” they said.Although various posts have to be created for the functioning of the hostel, it would not be a big problem as there are alternatives. “We could employ staff on daily wages or depute them from other government offices for the time being,” they said.
