Imphal: A day after she ended her 16-year fast against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), Manipur rights activist Irom Sharmila on Wednesday hit out at civil society saying they wanted her to become a martyr.

Irom told CNN-News18 in an interview that many activists in her state wanted her to remain a "demi-god" but she wanted to be seen as a normal human being.

"I think they want a person totally different from a women like me. I am a simple women who likes peace and dignity as a social will and bring a change. But people want me to be a martyr for a cause," she said.

She said her fight against AFSPA would continue as she wanted "a clean democracy in Manipur".

Irom also accused the Centre of being prejudiced against people of the state "because we look different and eat different things."

Irom , known as Manipur's 'Iron Lady', ended her 16-year-long hunger strike on Wednesday and declared that she wants to become the chief and repeal the contentious AFSPA.
