CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has ordered Rs 300,000 compensation to a schoolgirl who sustained serious injury in her right hand while playing in a merry-go-round during lunch hour and was amputated later.Of the amount, Rs 150,000 must be borne by the government and the remaining should be paid by the management of Ganapathi National Middle School in Kuthalam in Nagapattinam district, Justice KN Basha said while disposing of a writ petition from Vellimalai, father of the minor girl.During lunch hour on December 22, 2003, Muthulakshmi, a Class V student of the middle school, met with an accident while playing on a rattinam (merry-go-round). She sustained serious injuries in her right arm, which had to be amputated later.Holding the school management and the State responsible for the incident, the judge ordered the compensation to be paid in 12 weeks with 12 per cent interest from the date of petitioner’s representation dated September 9, 2005.
