New Delhi: Over 400 Indians have been safely evacuated from war-torn Yemen off the coast of Aden. The Navy's guided-missile destroyer INS Mumbai, was stationed just outside Aden harbour as heavy firing was reported there.
As part of this operation, called 'Operation Raahat', Indian authorities had hired small crafts to move 30-35 people at a time from the port to INS Mumbai. More than 1,500 Indians have been rescued so far.
One of the evacuees said, "Exit visas are not being given out. Many people are still stuck. Bombing are happening daily. Survival is tough."
In a rare case of India-Pakistan cooperation, the Pakistan navy has rescued 11 Indians among other nationals from Yemen. The Indian Navy also rescued three Pakistani nationals from the war-torn country.
Yemen has been witnessing fierce battle between Saudi-led coalition and Shiite rebels, who have battled their way into the heart of the country's main southern city Aden where fighting raged in the former stronghold of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi who has fled overseas.
