PARAVOOR: The opposition councillors of the Paravoor Municipality staged a walkout from the council meeting and held a dharna in front of the municipal office, here, on Tuesday. They were protesting against the mismanagement of the municipal administration and its utter failure in keeping the town clean. The opposition councillors alleged that the municipal administration led by chairperson Valsala Prasannakumar ignored the government directive to observe ‘Chlorinisation Day’ today at all Local Self Government bodies, in a bid to prevent epidemics like jaundice, rat fever, dengue fever etc. Usually the municipal administration would take initiative to convene a meeting of various government departments and other agencies during the middle of September to formulate an action plan for the Labour Week, they said. Also, the government circular directing to enhance the House tax and Professional tax in the municipal area were not discussed either in the standing committee or during council meetings. The municipal staff collected large amounts as taxes, at their will and pleasure, without the consent of elected representatives, opposition accused.
