KOCHI: Aesthetic sense plays a key role in personal excellence and self-confidence is necessary to move forward in life. The Department Of Oral and Maxillofacial, PVS Hospital, is conducting a camp in which growth modification techniques and orthognathic surgery are being done to rectify facial deformities. The camp is on till October 29.Facial deformities like prognathism, retrognathism, gummy smile, cleft deformities, and traumatic deformities can be rectified. Awareness on available treatment, especially for children, is being created. Dr Paul V Joseph of the Changing Faces Dental Clinic said the camp is basically aimed at credating awareness and reducing misconceptions about such treatments. The camp also aims at reducing the incorrect dental treatments being conducted.Interceptive orthodontics and growth modification are the major techniques undertaken in order to treat facial defects. While about 80 percent of the issues are hereditary, the rest of the 20 percent are acquired, he said. Though, these issues are not  fatal in nature but are issues of exterior aesthetics.    Latest refined techniques make the surgeries virtually risk-free and safer than before. The initial cost of the surgery is around Rs 35,000 and it may go up, he said. Around 20 patients visited the camp, he added.
