The Department of Tourism has spearheaded this initiative, creating a platform for the exhibition. The helicopter is prominently displayed next to the Shangumugham beach mermaid sculpture. Following the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions, several individuals began visiting to see the helicopter. People of all ages, including children and adults, came to take pictures and videos. A Russian-made Mil Mi-8 helicopter, previously used by the Indian Air Force, is on display at Shangumugham.

The Mil Mi-8, known as the Hip by NATO, is a medium twin-turbine helicopter. It was initially designed by the Soviet Union in the 1960s and entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1968. Nowadays, it is manufactured by Russia. Besides its primary function as a transport helicopter, the Mi-8 serves various other roles including as an airborne command post, armed gunship, and reconnaissance platform.
