New Delhi: US democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke out on Father's Day telling African-American fathers to be responsible and 'act like men'.
Obama quoted government statistics to show that more than half of all African-American children live in single-parent households.
These children are five times more likely to live in poverty, drop out of school and commit crime. Obama blamed irresponsible fathers for weak family foundations in the community.
In a Father's Day speech at a Chicago church, the Democrat also pressed for government action to help struggling parents, through tax breaks, job training and family-friendly employment laws. The Illinois senator amplified one of his campaign themes in condemning absent fathers who have "abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men."
He also spoke about challenges that he faced growing up with a single mother after his Kenyan father abandoned them. He also added that the biggest gift that fathers could give their children was hope.
