Chandigarh: A wedding party on Chandigarh turned a nightmare for an NRI couple who lost a bag containing four sets of jewellery worth $40,000 (Rs 1.7 million) and Rs 5,000 in cash.

US-based Surjit Singh and his wife Mandeep Kaur, to whom the bag belonged, had come to Chandigarh to attend the marriage of their nephew on Saturday. Police said after viewing the video footage of the wedding ceremony held at Aroma Hotel, a boy aged 10-12 years was found to be the prime suspect in the alleged theft.

"The boy was seen loitering aimlessly at the wedding party and did not seem to be accompanied by anyone," a police official said. He added that the police were looking for the boy.

According to the police, a gang could be behind the recent thefts at marriage functions in the city. Last week, 13 purses belonging to a bridegroom's party were stolen from Mountview Hotel. The loss was estimated at a few hundred thousand rupees.
