HYDERABAD: Once again, the Gandhi Hospital is in the news for wrong reasons. On Saturday, all emergency medical services and major surgeries were postponed as ventilators failed to function properly, due to lack of oxygen supply. 25 major surgeries in cardiology, gynaecology and other departments were postponed as oxygen started leaking from copper pipes on the third floor of the hospital. This led to oxygen supply to a number of ventilators being affected, with reportedly major surgeries to be performed between 12.30 p.m to 1.30 p.m. With pipes developing a leak, hospital authorities took up immediate repair works, suspending all major surgeries.Meanwhile, patients, who were to undergo surgeries on Saturday and their attendants were at a loss after doctors suddenly postponed surgeries. “My cousin was admitted to the gynaecology ward in the morning for a surgery. After we had shifted her from the general ward to the surgical ward, doctors suddenly informed they had cancelled all surgeries. They said there was a sudden interruption in oxygen supply to ventilators and that the surgery will be performed on Sunday,” said P Anjamma, an attendant. “Every ventilator has a manual system of pumping oxygen. An unconscious patient can breathe artificially with help of a ventilator. Even if the oxygen supply fails, our manual system is enough to keep all machines working. I have not come across such a situation before,” observed a working nurse. K Pradeep, executive engineer, bio-medical service, said they took up repair works after copper pipes developed leakage.
