HYDERABAD: Almost 100 persons, including 50 children, suffered burns while bursting crackers during the Diwali celebrations at different places in the twin cities. Several hospitals recorded a sudden spurt in patients with such injuries in the last 24 hours. While 30 were admitted to the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, 50 were treated at the LV Prasad Eye Institute, Jubilee Hills. More than half of the patients suffered only minor injuries but at least 10 had serious burns and five had to be operated upon. “We export more of these cases till Friday,” Dr C Premprakash Reddy, superintendent of Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, told Express. Stating that some of the patients were yet to be operated upon, he said, “we cannot immediately say how far their visibility has been affected.”The tragic part of it all is that half of the injured were children and at least 10 per cent of them, doctors say, will suffer partial blindness. On the positive side, the number of injured is far lesser than last year and no fatal incidents have occured.“This year, the number is lesser than last year. I think the cases have come down by at least 30 per cent,” Dr Premprakash Reddy said. At the LV Prasad Eye Institute too the numbers were far lesser this time. One of the injured was a 14-year-old boy, G Srinu from Parigi, Ranga Reddy district. He suffered burns in his right eye while lighting a flower pot. “I was told to be in hospital for a week,” he said with tears in his eyes. “I might have to undergo an eye operation,” he added visibly worried. His left eye was also hurt.In another incident, a five-year-old boy T Ram Charan from Uppal suffered burns on his face and hands. He suffered the burns while playing with an unexploded cracker in front of his house. “Doctors advised us to keep him in hospital for three days,” said T Raju, his father. In a similar incident, Ali Hussain, a 10-year-old, suffered burns on his face while lighting a flower pot.
