ALUVA: Mullaperiyar is the most important issue in the state. The government cannot compromise on the safety of the people in the state, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told mediapersons here on Sunday. “Tamil Nadu will get sufficient water and Kerala should be safe. Our demand for a new dam at Mullaperiyar is fully justifiable. But we should deal with the issue with prudence and self control. We should not take the line of confrontation with the neighbouring state,” Chandy said. The dam was constructed around 117 years ago with a lease agreement of 999 years. But nobody can guarantee whether the dam would withstand the natural calamities. Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and Water Resources Minister P J Joseph would leave for Delhi to sort out the issue, the Chief Minister said. He hesitated to comment on the indefinite strike proposed by Kerala Congress (M) leaders in front of Parliament and the Assembly.
