THIRUVANANATHAPURAM: The state government on Sunday sent a formal request to the Union Home Ministry seeking probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the international phone calls made from state prisons. After the incident came to light, the Union Home Ministry had sought a detailed report to the state government on the issue. Jail ADGP Alexander Jacob had submitted a report on this regard to the state government. The report was based on raids conducted by the jail department after allegations that Kerala Congress (B) leader R Balakrishna Pillai violated prison rules and used mobile phone in jail. During the raids, it was found that mobile phone usage by prisoners was rampant. About 120 mobile phones were also seized. Further investigation revealed that calls were made from the jails to various countries and even to satellite telephones. This has raised the suspicion that some the foreign calls could actually have some terror connection.A preliminary examination by the state cyber cell on 30 seized phones had revealed that a total of 3,000 calls were made through them. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had earlier told the Assembly that the state government would seek NIA’s help in the case.
