CHENNAI: To fight crime and traffic problems along the 28-km East Coast Road, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday announced the creation of a police range at Neelankarai. Jayalalithaa told the State Assembly on Wednesday that Rs 14.77 lakh would be spent every year for the latest measure as law and order, incidents of crime and traffic congestion at the weekends have become a cause of concern on ECR. Announcing the formation of Greater Chennai Police Commisssionerate by merging Chennai Suburban Police Commissionerate with the Chennai City Police Commissionerate, Jayalaltihaa said that to implement this scheme, the Government would create four new posts - Additional Commissioner of Police (crime), two additional commissioner for traffic and an additional commissioner for headquarters. The Government would spend an initial amount of Rs 73.12 lakh, followed by Rs 28.46 lakh, the Chief Minister said.The Chief Minister also sanctioned 1125 additional personnel in the Chennai city traffic police department to manage the growing volume of traffic. They will be recruited for traffic management and investigations. The existing strength is 2,238. The Government would spend Rs 33.25 crore at the beginning of every year and 2.3 crore as continuous expenditure.The Government would also open new traffic police stations at Valasarwakkam and Semmenchery at a cost of Rs 1.7 crore to manage the increasing traffic and new law and order police stations at Koyambedu, Taramani and Kanathur. The Government would also announce the procurement of additional patrol vehicles for a modern control room in the city and upgrade police outposts to police stations and enhance the daily allowance to home guards.
