CUTTACK:  The Neurosurgery department of the SCB Medical is all set to launch the advanced neuroendoscopic surgery unit to deal with a host of problems relating to the brain. The unit would go live on Friday with department’s surgeons conducting demonstration surgeries on a person suffering from hydrocephalus (collection of water in the brain) and another with pituitary gland tumour. The minimal invasive surgery procedure using micro telescopes and cameras not only minimises trauma to the brain or spinal cord but also results in drastically lesser pain and hospital stay along with quick recovery for the patients. “We would be able to perform critical brain operations with the endoscopy procedure, which is the first of its kind in the Government setup in Odisha. Starting off with endoscopic surgery of the brain,  the procedure would gradually be expanded to neurospine operations,” head of Neurosurgery department Prof SS Mishra said. Besides, the department is sprucing itself up for transformation into a  Neurosurgery Centre of Excellence with facilities covering all aspects of the speciality from stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, skull-based surgery, craniofacial reconstruction, cerebrovascular surgery, disc replacement and spinal navigation system-based operations soon. The department is in the line for expansion for installation of new infrastructure. It is planned to be provided with the space vacated by the Cardio Thorassic Surgery department which is to be shifted to the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences by year-end.The authorities are also working on introducing surgery for epilepsy to deal with the problem in the community. According to estimates, at least one in hundred is affected by the problem which is characterised by seizures and fits. The major concern, however, is around 30 per cent of the epileptics have developed resistance to drugs and surgery is the only option left. Presently, surgery for epilepsy is available at only a few centres in India. “Epilepsy is the focus theme of the 25th Annual Conference of Neuroscientists of Eastern India that gets underway here on Saturday. We have roped in experts like Prof P Sarat Chandra of AIIMS, New Delhi, MB Rao of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital for Epilepsy, Mumbai, and Manas Panigrahi from Hyderabad to discuss the modern developments in treatment of the disease,” said Prof Mishra. More than 200 neurosurgeons, neurologists and allied disciplines from Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam and Tripura would be taking part to exchange knowledge on advancement in urosciences.
