NEW DELHI: The Minister of State, V Narayanasamy, met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday to discuss issues dogging the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project. Talking to the Express, Narayanasamy said that he briefed the Prime Minister about the issues raised by the locals during his visit to the protest venue. “I also briefed him about my meeting with Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa,’’ he said. Narayanasamy also updated the PM about the steps that were being taken to assuage the fears of the people. The government, reportedly, has planned to put out advertisements and hold interactive sessions to explain the people that adequate safety measure qere being taken to guard against any possible eventuality - even natural calamity. After the Japan Fukushima accident, locals fear that Koodankulam plant could also face the same fate. But, the Minister said, that the Nuclear Power Corporation was following all safety measures. In her letter to the PM, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has written about these legitimate fears in the people’s mind. An all-party delegation, led by Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu, will be shortly visiting New Delhi to discuss the KKNPP issue with the PM. Narayanasamy said, “the Prime Minister has agreed to meet the delegation.” The date of meeting will be fixed later. During his New York visit, Prime Minister Singh singled out Tamil Nadu for praise, saying that the state’s industrialisation has been fastest in India. He also said that the pending nuclear project would give the state the much-needed energy security.
