BANGALORE: Amidst recurring reports of financial mismanagement and severe criticism from the Opposition leaders, the 'Nagar Ratna' award conferred on the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for Best Financial Management in Mumbai on Friday has surprised many.
The award, which includes a citation and a certificate, has been instituted by the All India Institute of Local Selfgovernment for best performing JNNURM cities. In June, JD(S) Opposition leader Padmanabha Reddy had called for a complete revamp of the financial system in the corporation.

The Opposition leaders have been alleging that the corporation has not prepared a single bank reconciliation statement since 1964.

In this backdrop, the Nagar Ratna award comes as a surprise especially since it is for exceptional financial management. The Deputy Mayor S Harish, however, maintains that this award was well deserved. "This award proves all the critics of BBMP wrong," he said.

In a press release, Commissioner Siddaiah said that the award confirmed the efforts taken by the Corporation in disciplining the financial system, including augmentation and mobilisation of resources and cost cutting measures.
