A 27-year-old woman died and several others sustained injuries after a drunk passenger tried to grab the steering wheel of a BEST bus in Mumbai’s Lalbaugh area, following a heated argument between the two.
Due to the reckless behaviour of the passenger, who was under the influence of alcohol, the driver lost control of the bus, that led to situation where many were injured.
According to a Times of India report, the incident took place inside an electric BEST bus which ran on route no. 66 between Ballard Pier and Rani Laxmibai Chowk in Sion. The accident occurred while the vehicle was crossing passing near Ganesh Talkies in Lalbaugh.
One of the bikers, identified as Nupur Maniyar, who was seriously injured, died after being taken to the hospital, police said.
As per police officials from the Kalachowki station, the chaos began when a heavily inebriated passenger got into a heated argument with the bus driver. However, the situation soon escalated when the passenger grabbed the steering wheel suddenly, thereby leading the driver to lose control.
Following such a reckless action by the passenger, the bus went off track, thereby hitting two motorcycles, a car, and several pedestrians.
Nine people were injured due to the incident, out of which three suffered serious injuries. All of them were quickly taken to various hospitals across the city for medical treatment.
The intoxicated passenger, Datta Shinde, who is responsible for the incident have been detained. Police has now started a thorough investigation to determine further details and potential charges.
