Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed promised to streamline the distribution of ration in the state and assured that the government will take up the issue on priority basis.

The ration will be provided to the people as per the 2011 census.

"The Government will take up on priority the issue of providing ration to the people as per the Census of 2011," Chief Minister said replying to a supplementary in the Legislative Council.

"We will streamline ration distribution in the state immediately," he said.

Referring to Agenda of Alliance of the BJP-PDP coalition government in the state, Sayeed said adequate provisions of ration in all rural and semi-urban areas will be ensured, even if on a no-profit-and-no-loss basis.

The Chief Minister assured the House he would take up the issue with the Union government also.

He further said the demand for import of food-grains into the state has increased as the farmers prefer cash crops owing to greater returns.

Earlier, Minister for Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution (CA&PD) Zulfkar Ali said in the Legislative Council today that 19.72 lakh households have been issued ration cards in the state as per 2001 Census.

No fresh cards have been issued to any household after census 2001, however, every ration card is revalidated each year, he said.

At present, approximately 496,873 deserving households, which include 195,423 from Jammu, 295,032 from Kashmir and 6,418 households from Ladakh, are without ration cards, the minister said, adding presently ration is provided at the rate of 35 Kg per family.

He said there is a provision of providing five kg ration per person per month under National Food Security Act 2013 (NFSA) which is not yet implemented in the state.
