CHENNAI: As 2012 was ushered in with much gusto, approximately 3,180 Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses are all set to improve their visibility on roads, particularly after sundown.In an attempt to catch the attention of other vehicles on road, the public carrier has intensified the process of pasting illuminated fluorescent stickers on the rear side of the buses, which would reflect when the beam from headlights of the approaching vehicles fall on them. The thin red-coloured stickers, pasted just below the windshields, would be helpful in reducing accidents, which are more often caused due to the failure of tail lamps and brake lights. “It has come to our notice that poor illumination of our buses is one of the major reasons for accidents involving MTC buses on the rear side. Those driving on the road are unable to judge the distance of the bus ahead, particularly when the brake lights do not work, leading to accidents,” an official said. “Hence, we have kick started the process of pasting fluorescent stickers, apart from repairing the brake lights in the fleet to ensure the safety of road users,” sources said. Such fluorescent stickers could be found in the State-owned Transport Corporation buses until two years ago. However, the reflectors faded away, leading to the current measure. The MTC has covered over 3,000 buses with fluorescent stickers, while the remaining 180 are expected to glitter with the fluorescent tag shortly. “We are hopeful that the move would bear fruit in the coming days,” the sources added.
