Thiruvananthapuram: The national council of the anti-Deve Gowda camp in the party on Saturday confirmed the decision of its national executive to remove Gowda as president and suspend him from the primary membership for six years, furthering their divide.
The meeting also elected Surendra Mohan as the new president of the faction, claiming to be the real JD(S).
The "continued defiance of secularism by the party president" was the reason behind his removal, said the resolution.
Gowda also allowed "the defection of 38 MLAs in Karnataka from JD-S hobnobbing with the BJP", it said.
The national executive on Friday decided to reconstitute the disciplinary action committee and the omnibus resolution annulling the actions taken by Deve Gowda were also endorsed by the national council.
JD-S leader M P Veerendrakumar, MP, explained that they had decided to bid good bye to Gowda because he had chosen to ally with "communal" forces.
He said the party would try to reunite the Janata Parivar and strive towards strengthening the secular platform. The political resolution was moved by Krushna Chandra Patra (Orissa).
