Modi's proposal: 'Sonia' Sarovar dam
Narendra Modi says he is willing to name the Narmada Sarovar project after Sonia or Rajiv Gandhi if it meant speedy completion.

Ahmedabad: It's another cracker of an offer from Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Launching a vitriolic attack on the Centre for the Narmada imbroglio, Modi said on Friday that he was willing to change the name of the Narmada Sarovar project after Sonia or Rajiv Gandhi, if it meant speedy completion.

"You want to name the project after Rajiv Gandhi, I have no problem. You want to name it after Soniaben, I still have no problem. All I want is that the project should be complete. Gujarat has many other ways to glorify Sardar Saheb," he said.

"The Congress is so much fascinated by the Gandhi name, I am willing to name the project after them," he said, while inaugurating a solar air-conditioning system developed for the first time in the country by a Gujarat company at Satej village near Gandhinagar.

He said there is no synergy in what the Congress at the state and at the national level are doing.

He said the Narmada project has been on since years and it is a shame that the Centre is putting such roadblocks. "But we will not take this lying down. Gujarat government and every Gujarati will fight for it," he said.

Commending the Mamata Energy for coming out with an innovative system, he said: "We have always given priority to saving energy and how non-conventional energy sources should be developed. We will fight to have the Narmada project which would provide drinking water to arid Kutch and electricity at cheap rates."

He asked the company to develop solar pumps which could be used in Narmada for the purpose of drip irrigation.
