CHENNAI: The Madras Medical College (MMC) found a place in the priority list of almost all high-scoring MBBS aspirants in the city on Day One of the counselling for MBBS/BDS, held in the city on Friday. Among the top 100 ranks, 93 students had opted to join the premier medical institution, which had on offer 137 seats in the General Category. Counselling for MBBS and BDS began full throttle on Friday with health minister Dr V S Vijay handing out the allotment orders of the top ten rankers, all of whom chose to study at the 176year old institution.State MBBS topper Sivaranjani K from Namakkal candidly told reporters that her ambition had been to study MBBS at MMC, after which she wanted to specialise in cardiology. She echoed the words of several top 350 rankholders called for counselling. The top 35 rankholders opted for the college in Park Town, confirmed officials of the Directorate of Medical Education. The college, known for producing some of the most renowned medical professionals, was the top choice for most, who later chose Stanley Medical College or Kilpauk Medical College, based on the availability of seats in their category.Shanmugapriya A, who secured the 81st rank, was among the minuscule minority to have opted for Stanley Medical College, despite a vacancy in MMC.The OC category in MMC proved to be the earliest to be filled, with its 44 seats being allotted within an hour of the start of the counselling sessions.At the end of the day, the college had only 16 vacancies, including 11 in SC, four in SCA and the lone ST seat. Of the 350 students who had received call letters for Friday, four did not attend the counselling session, while one opted out of the race after seeing the available choice of seats. "In all, there will be 1,653 seats from 17 government medical colleges across the seat, apart from at least 650 seats from private medical colleges," said Vijay.Nine private colleges have already agreed to surrender a percentage of their seats for the government quota, while the Chennai Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Tiruchy, is also likely to join the list once it receives renewal from the Medical Council of India. Counselling will resume on Saturday for 350 students.
