Minor bride rescued

CHENNAI: Pattabiram police and friends of a 17-year-old girl rescued a girl, who was to be forcibly married to her uncle later this month.Police said the girl,  Oviyam, lived with her siblings and mother, while her father was mentally ill. Oviyam was to be married to her 32-year-old uncle on April 25. On Monday, as the wedding preparations were in full swing, the girl sent an SMS to her friends on her mobile, seeking their help. Some of them approached the police, who roped in child welfare officers, who spoke to the mother and took an assurance in writing that she would not be married till she attained the age of 18. Police later cancelled the wedding and the girl was sent home.
