KOLLAM: Mild tremors were reported again in the district on Thursday, a day after the Sumatra earthquake’s aftershocks were felt. Officials in the Indian Meteorological Department, Thiruvananthapuram, said that the tremors felt were a distant echo of the earthquake in Gulf of California. People in Koodakkayam near Kalluvathukkal, Oyoor, Kodiyoor on the banks of Ithikkara river, Baliyamkulam and Panniyarkudi said that they experienced tremors around noon and later at 1 p.m. The areas which experienced quake were near quarries and river beds prone to rampant sand mining and experts point out that seismic effect would be felt stronger in these regions. A few residents at Koodakkayam claimed that cracks have developed in houses after the tremor. However, Revenue officials who visited the area said that it could not be confirmed as several quarries were concentrated in the area and the crack could have been developed earlier due to the impact from blasting of the rocks.
