CHENNAI: The TN Dr MGR Medical University is keen on introducing more doctoral programmes and research oriented courses to help fulfil the demand for super specialists in various branches of medicine, university vice chancellor Prof Mayilvahanan Natarajan said on Monday.Addressing the gathering after the launch of Agada Diabetes Care here at Raj Bhavan, Dr Mayilvahanan said there was a dearth of super specialists in all the fields of medicine. “The university is keen on starting more doctoral and research programmes besides fellowships and certificate courses to help bridge the gap and improve access to health care,” he pointed out.Stating that initiatives like the National Program on Diabetes of the Union government to bring better awareness in the management of diabetes alone would not suffice to tackle diabetes, he said more health care professionals were needed, coupled with an increased involvement of private sector and cutting edge research. Citing WHO estimates on mortality and morbidity with reference to diabetes and cardiac ailments, he said: “It is certain that lost productivity due to morbidity caused by diabetic complications will be more when left unchecked. It could threaten an emerging economy like ours.”Governor K Rosaiah inaugurated the Agada Diabetes Care, a specialty diabetes hospital in collaboration with Joslin Diabetes Centre, USA.
