Methodology of The Golden South Survey
The CNN-IBN-CSDS-Deccan Herald survey was conducted in 114 locations spread across 15 cities in seven states.

New Delhi: This is a report based on the findings of the Southern States Survey conducted by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) Delhi in collaboration with CNN-IBN and Deccan Herald.

The survey was conducted in 114 locations spread across 15 cities in seven states of India.

The survey was undertaken in all the four southern states. In each state of the South, interviews were conducted in three cities (Andhra Pradesh – Hyderabad, Kurnool and Vijayawada; Karnataka – Bangalore, Dharwad and Mangalore; Kerala – Calicut, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram; Tamil Nadu – Coimbatore, Chennai and Madurai).

Besides, the four states of South India, the survey was conducted in Mumbai (Maharashtra), Delhi (Delhi) and Kolkata (West Bengal).

As many as 2585 respondents were interviewed. Of them, 1655 (64 per cent) were South Indians living in South India, 284 (11 per cent) were South Indians living in the rest of India, 346 (13 per cent) were non-Southerners living in the South and 300 (12 per cent) were non-Southerners living outside South India.

The sample for the survey was selected using the purposive sampling technique. The sample was made fairly representative by including a cross section of the population. 43 per cent of those interviewed were women, 18 per cent of the sample consisted of Christians and Muslims, 33 per cent of the sample consisted of those from the Backward Castes and 13 per cent of the sample was made up of Dalits. More than half the sample consisted of those who had not been to college for higher studies.

The fieldwork for the study was conducted between November 10 and 13 2006 and 112 investigators and supervisors conducted face to face interviews at the place of residence of the respondent using a structured questionnaire in the language spoken and understood by the respondent.

Sanjay Kumar of the CSDS directed the survey and the field work was coordinated by K C Suri (Andhra Pradesh), Pushkar Raj (Delhi), K M Sajad (Kerala), B S Padmavathi (Karnataka), Nitin Birmal (Maharashtra), G Koteshwara Prasad (Tamil Nadu) and Suprio Basu (West Bengal). The team that designed, coordinated and analysed the survey comprised of Yogendra Yadav, Sandeep Shastri, Sanjeer Alam, Praveen Rai, Himanshu Bhattacharya and Kanchan Malhotra.
