KOZHIKODE: Saving people might be what they learn, but five MBBS students of the Kozhikode Medical College have taken it upon themselves to save the environment.Dan Faustino, Ashish Nair, Arun P, Adarsh A K and Roy J Palatty have discarded their fuel-run vehicles in favour of bicycles on the Medical College campus, which is spread in 270 acres, with the aim of creating significant change in people’s mindset. “We are not concerned about the fuel price hikes which hit often, but keen on a pollution-free campus,” say the students.“The purpose is to promote the use of bicycles among students, particularly among those who opt for motorbikes and feel shy of using bicycles,” said Dan Faustino, a third year MBBS student. “Cycling is environment-friendly as it does not run on fuel, and it also helps people to keep their body in good health. This thought is behind using cycles on the campus,” added Dan. Astonishing the onlookers, the medical students started their cycle ride seven months ago and now their campaign is gaining applause from doctors and students of the Medical College. “Many junior students have now come forth with the cycles and we are getting support from our teachers too,” said Arun P, a BSc Nursing student. We lend cycles to many of them to travel inside the campus and outside, he added.“In IITs and IIMs vehicles are not allowed inside the campus. The students of these campuses are using cycles and we can adopt this model in Kozhikode Medical College campus too,” said Ashish Nair, third year MBBS student.Plans are also afoot to set up a cycle club on Medical College campus for promoting cycling. “The government should take action to lower the prices of cycles for the promotion of cycling as the price range of cycles are from Rs 3000 to Rs 5000,” opined the students unanimously. “The cycle riding on the Medical College campus lowers the pollution level and it is a good physical exercise for the students,” said Dr Maya Sudhakar, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology. We are extending all supports to the students in this effort, she added.
