New Delhi: Maoist guerrillas have called off the indefinite strike in Southern Nepal after emergency talks took place between their chiefs and Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on Sunday.

Koirala held separate talks with Maoist supremo Prachanda, his deputy Baburam Bhattarai as well as leaders of protesting ethnic groups. The negotiations will continue on Monday.

The Maoists had called a strike on Sunday demanding the closure of a local army camp.

Though the strike is now off, public transport entrepreneurs in Kathmandu are demanding security and compensation after the guerillas torched buses on Sunday.

At least 12 people were injured as Maoist cadres went on a rampage torching about a dozen vehicles, including a tourist bus.

The Maoists hurled the explosives on the roads to stop traffic and forced the passengers out of the vehicles before setting them ablaze, reported PTI.

Police said telephone and power lines were also damaged by the Maoists.
