BANGALORE: In the wake of reports of children’s death in Hyderabad-Karnataka region due to malnutrition, the state government has decided to seek more funds from the Centre to provide better quality food to the children in Anganavadis. As of now, the state and Central governments are giving Rs 2 to every child per day for mid-day meal. After deducting taxes, each child will get around Rs 3.60. With this meager amount, it is difficult to provide quality food. So we have decided to request the Centre to increase its share to Rs 6 per child, said Women and Child Welfare Minister C C Patil.Patil said that he would also write to CM D V Sadananda Gowda seeking a hike of Rs 2. If we get Rs 10 per child, then we can provide better food, he added.Besides seeking more funds, the government is also seeking exemption from VAT on foods being supplied to the Anganavadis. On the deaths of children, the minister said that it was wrong to attribute these deaths only to malnutrition or hunger. However, the state has decided to give milk and eggs to all pregnant women in Devadurga taluk in Raichur on a pilot basis.
