CHENNAI: Members of the newly formed Makkal Sakthi party staged a demonstration at the Memorial Hall on Wednesday demanding the closure of a TASMAC liquor shop (No: 915) located near Thirumailai Railway Station. The demonstrators complained that the shop was a nuisance to the people of that locality and also to commuters using the railway station. Besides, drunk men, who emerge out of the shop in the prime locality have also been reported to have caused problems for people visiting the Kapaleeshwarar Temple, which is a stone’s throw away.Makkal Sakthi earlier launched a signature campaign and had sent the petition to the Chief Minister’s Office. After getting signature from the local residents, 5-10 postcards were also sent to the authorities concerned every day.“The shop is causing nuisance to the people. There is a canal near the shop. People who come there to drink are using the canal bank wall as their table. The local residents are often irritated at the sight when they pass by,” said R Ashok Rajendran of Makkal Sakthi. He said that the shop was causing disturbance to the residents of Madhavrao Thottam, Abiramapuram and Pallakku Maaniyam areas at Mylapore.Makkal Sakthi’s state steering committee member, Senthil Arumugam said, “If the authorities keep evading the issue further, we will move the court seeking shutdown of the shop.”Around 40 people, including 20 women, from Mylapore participated in the demonstration.
