Mumbai: As Maharashtra faces one of its worst droughts in four decades and is facing acute shortage of drinking water, the people living in the affected areas are forced to consume polluted water. The use of polluted and dirty water has led to several water-borne diseases in the area.
In Dhule district, which is one of the worst drought-hit area, the people are not only facing grappling with shortage of water but several of them have fallen ill after consuming dirt water. The people allege that water is supplied only one in week and even the municipal corporation is supplying polluted water. As a result water-borne diseases are spreading fast in Dhule and surrounding areas.
Every day at least 50 patients suffering from gastroenteritis are being admitted to the local hospitals. In the last one week, more than 200 gastroenteritis patients have been admitted in government hospitals of the district. The number of patients in private hospitals is manifold. Even doctors say that the situation could deteriorate further if the supply of polluted and dirty water is not stopped.
