KOCHI:  Maharaja’s College turned out to be  a cauldron of emotions as four generations of ‘kings and queens’ came together for a rare event on Saturday. Tears of happiness and moments unbounded excitement marked the occasion as the entire Maharaja’s College family united on the college campus in Kochi for ‘Maharajakeeyam-2012’, the mega alumni meet. “The history of the college is not confined to the experiences of its students, but is integral to the 150-years of Kerala’s history,” said P T Thomas MP, speaking at the inaugural function. The event came alive with the presence of the nearly 15,000 students and teachers, that included those from batches from 1932 to 2010. Ninety-three-year-old Dhivakara Menon, the oldest alumni present, caught everybody’s attention.  The get-together began by spliting the students into groups based on their batches and by offering floral tributes to the late teachers and students. The event was  inaugurated by Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi. “Apart from the treasured knowledge and vast experience that the college has offered me, it holds a special place in my heart for another reason. This is the place where I met my beloved wife Mercy, who stood by me through thick and thin. Maharaja’s is what made me the person that I’m today. My gratitude to this college and the teachers is immeasurable,” said Vayalar Ravi.Alumni members who made it to the event included prominent figures from all walks of life such as former Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac, P T Thomas MP, T A Ahmed Kabir MLA, Kochi Deputy Mayor B Bhadra, Balachandran Chullikkad, journalists T V R Shenoy, K M Roy, actors Mammootty, Baburaj, Sarayu Mohan, Ansar Kalabhavan and former Head of the Regional Cancer Centre Dr V P Gangadharan. Most of the dignitaries recalled their romantic as well political experiences at the college. The event was also a platform for former teachers like renowned critic M K Sanu, M Achuthan, Antony Jojo and many others to to rekindle with their counterparts and old students. The event concluded with the release of the souvenir ‘Maharajakeeyam’, featuring articles from experiences of 87 former students, that included Defence Minister A K Antony and Vayalar Ravi among others.
