The 10-day Ganesh festival has kicked off with prayers being held at homes.

New Delhi: Ganesh Chaturthi is being observed with gaiety across the country. In Mahrashtra, the 10-day festival has kicked off on with prayers being held at homes. There is a festive look across Maharahstra with colourful pandals displaying Ganesh idols.

Police in Mumbai have raised security levels outside pandals - about 1000 policemen have been deployed on round-the-clock shifts to ensure the festival goes off without hitches.

Acting on inputs from Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Intelligence Bureau, the Pune Police have made elaborate security arrangements for the festive season.

Addressing a press conference here today, Police Commissioner Meeran Borwankar said, "After getting intelligence inputs, the police held a special meeting with Dagdusheth Ganapati Halwai Trust members on security measures. The police also held meetings with prominent members of Muslim community in the backdrop of Eid as well as with Ganesh

Mandals and politicians."

"At least 10,000 policemen, eight Quick Response Teams, 12 platoons (around 1200 personnel) of the State Reserve Police Force, six Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads, 500 Home Guards and 200 civil defence employees have been deployed in the city," Borwankar said.

Seeking cooperation from citizens, she said, "People are being advised through posters, bulk SMSes and pamphlets not to touch any suspicious object."
