Luck smiles yet again on GKSF prize winner

Luck seems to be playing hide and seek with Abdulla of Vadakara who won the Grand Kerala Shopping Fest mega-prize of 1kg gold, but had unfortunately misplaced the ticket.

Luck smiled on him again when the Kerala High Court on Friday directed the state to take a decision with regard to the disbursal of the gift.

Justice C K Abdul Rahim issued the order on a petition filed by Abdulla, seeking a directive for releasing  the mega-prize of the shopping fest conducted between January 1, 2009, to January 15, 2010, without insisting on the production of the original coupon which was lost from his custody. The petitioner had purchased an air-conditioner and its accessories during the shopping fest and was issued coupons.

Later, he won the prize in the lucky draw. “The authorities had traced him out using the counterfoil of the coupon and was invited to a function convened at Kollam. The Finance Minister had presented a symbolic certificate to him,” the petition pointed out.

However, the bank refused to hand over the gold and insisted that the coupon be    produced. The state government submitted the original coupon and bill of purchase needed to be produced for collecting the gift. The petitioner contended that the state itself had identified him as the winner. The court said that it was for the state to decide on giving the prize on the basis of the material proof.
