One person died and 10 were injured when a trawler lorry plunged off the Birupa river bridge and crashed into a workers’ rest shed below on Monday. According to reports, the lorry was on its way from Visakhapatnam to Bokaro through the National Highway No.5, carrying a machinery consignment, when the driver apparently lost control over the vehicle. The 18-wheeler lorry swerved off the bridge wall and plunged into the river bed.
The river bed has been occupied for construction of the second road bridge by Simplex Infrastructure Limited. A camp and a rest shed have been set up to house the workers and other materials. The lorry crashed straight into the rest shed while several workers were still inside it.
One person was killed on the spot while at least 10 others sustained injuries. The deceased has been identified as Ghamandi Paswan (40) of Muzaffarpur in Bihar. The injured have been rushed to the SCB Medical College and Hospital here with several of them in a critical condition. The driver of the lorry has also been injured, police said.
