CHENNAI: When compared to other cultures, Indian wedding jewellery has the most exorbitant assortment of delicately crafted pieces. But with an increase in gold prices, a lot of young women want to be adorned with semi-precious stones and diamonds on their D-Day. From an impressive assortment of chandelier earrings, pendants and bracelets in western and ethnic style to traditional temple jewellery, Chennai has been welcoming a lot of jewellery designers recently. And what is more in trend is the beautiful creations in precious stones set in silver and white gold. Explains Radhakrishnan, MD of GRT Jewellers, “Gold has always been in trend. Though the prices have gone up, people prefer to have a little gold in their bridal jewellery. In fact, GRT is coming up with its classic collection that will have light weight gold jewellery. Apart from gold, many women prefer to adorn themselves with antique jewellery and a lot of diamonds that make for an elegant bridal attire.” Making a style statement is the crystal phenomenon these days. Stylish cuts and a focus on embellishments, as well as unconventional materials used as jewellery, are also becoming a rage among youngsters. “Let’s come out of the traditional yellow gold and try out something contemporary. Designers have started making crystal jewellery embedded with gold and use fabrics, mesh and threads to make a stunning art piece of jewellery these days. You can accessorise these jewellery pieces with a lehenga or a designer sari,” says Punita Trikka, a jewellery designer. However, gold jewellery can act as a long-term investment for many. When it comes to a wedding — diamonds, semi-precious stones and silver jewellery seem to rule the roost!
