CHENNAI: The first question that Dr Kasu Prasad Reddy throws atyou can catch you un awares, “Why are you still wearing spectacles?”, theemphasis being on the ‘still’. Pointing at his own tinted frames, he says that after looking at some of the technology that he has acquired at his facility, even he is considering getting his reading problems resolved, “For a long time, only shortsighted people could be treated by lasik, but nowmultiple problems can be corrected,” he says and adds, “even at my age!” The man who pioneered the Lasik eye treatment in the country, seemed excitedat the prospect of his eyecare brand, Maxivision Eye Hospital, being launched in Chennai on Tuesday. Merged with Medfort Hospitals Pvt Ltd, Maxivision will now be a part of the 12-hospital network across six cities. Announcing the emergence of the Medfort-Maxivision Group, Dr Reddy, the new Co-Chairman and head of all eye-care initiatives, said, “We’ve always had technological superiority. And it’s going to be the same here in Chennai. At least after this patients will be able to access top-class ophthalmic technology, as other healthcare providers scramble to expand.” This joint venture opens up several exciting prospects for people with basicvision problems in Chennai. Dr G S K Velu, Chairman of Medfort Hospitalsadded, “We are poised to have the best cataract and retina units, but Lasiksuites combining Supracor and Intracor for presbyopic solutions will be themajor component we will offer.” Reminiscing on his days spent at Stanley Medical College, Dr Reddy says that it “feels good” to return to Madras after having worked in the UK and then Hyderabad since 1996. “We have planned a massive expansion drive and every eye care centre will ensure notonly great skill but affordability.” Reflecting on the expansion plans of the year old healthcare chain, Dr Velu reveals that, “The expansion might be as big as 50 centres across 20 cities in the next year or so.” But just like they have done in Andhra Pradesh, there will be focus on making this care available for people who don’t live merely in the metros, added Dr Reddy.
