Srinagar: Top Lashkar-e-Taiba militant Junaid Mattoo has reportedly been trapped by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
According to reports, a search and cordon operation has been launched in Arwani, Kulgam early on Friday based on intelligence inputs.
Two to three militants are believed to be holed up in the area. Mattoo, a LeT commander, is believed to be among them. He has been active for the past two years and has been termed as a ‘Category A’ militant with a prize of Rs 10 lakh on his head for capture.
Sources told CNN-News18 that operations are ongoing but have been hampered by stone pelters who are targeting the security forces from three sides.
Mattoo, if killed, will be the second big success for the security forces after Burhan Wani's close aid Sabzar Ahmad Bhat was eliminated in an encounter on May 27 .
Mattoo is believed to have joined militancy at the age of 18 in June 2015. He has been put in the list of the 12 most wanted militants in the valley right now by the Army. Security forces believe Mattoo to have been part of two separate attacks on police forces, in which four policemen lost their lives.
