RAMANATHAPURAM: The Sri Lankan Navy began the new year on a note of goodwill, on Monday, by providing cakes to astounded Indian fishermen mid-sea. Fishing operations resumed on Monday after a week’s lull due to the cyclonic weather. More than 600 mechanised boats ventured into the sea from Rame-swaram Island. Fishermen trawling in Lankan waters tend to be fearful due to recent indiscriminate attacks from the Lankan navy. When a group of fishermen saw a Lankan navy ship nearing them in the darkness, they were stunned to see some personnel jump into the Indian boats and greet them for the new year. The navymen then waved their hands while leaving in a farewell gesture. The fishermen blamed some colleagues for the Lankan navy attacks saying they aggravated protocol by using banned nets which affected the livelihood of Lankan fishermen. The Indian government should take stern action against such violations, they added. This move on the behalf of the Lankans is seen as a ray of hope for fishermen and they hope the new year will see no threat in these seas.
